Blue Can-Am Maverick Buggy is ultimate racing machine

We understand that it is easy to get swept up in the excitement of getting a new machine, but it's important that you understand what is required of you before climbing aboard.

In an attempt to help you as much as possible, we have created this utility vehicle FAQ that answers some of the most common questions that we get. Should you have any more, you can, of course, contact us using the contact form or calling us on 01608 652653.

What are the benefits of a utility vehicle?

Similar to the quad bike/ATV, the Utility Vehicle (UTV) or as it’s sometimes known, a side-by-side vehicle, is perfectly suited for harsher environments where a bit extra is needed.

Unlike the quad bike, the utility vehicle often possesses a wider surface area, bigger engine and a tilting bed which provides room for carrying equipment and materials. These are often more popular for industries such as hunting, farming, agriculture and those who work with horses on a daily basis. We have sold these to a wide variety of professions, from estates to farmers, horse racing teams to people who just want to move their plane. Whatever it might be, we can help you find something suitable for the job.

Which off-road vehicle is best?

We are always going to be biased towards Can-Am Quads and Utility Vehicles, but we also stand by our morales, and would never sell a product we don’t believe in. Over the years we have sold almost every brand of quad bike, and the quality and durability of Can-Am far exceed anything else on the market.

While we have our opinion, it’s important you make your own. Call us on 01608 652653 to arrange a demonstration, or to question our technicians on comparisons to other machines. Our technicians have over 25 years with quads and utility vehicles, and will always be honest with you. We have over 70 years of combined experience in the agricultural world, we want you to have the best tool for the job, and will always endeavour to help you achieve that. We care, it’s as simple as that.

What are utility vehicles used for?

A utility vehicle is a vehicle that is designed for an application and to carry out a job that would otherwise be a challenge in a traditional passenger vehicle. Often, UTVs are used as a maintenance vehicle, thanks to the highly efficient flatbed that is at the back of the machine, making them perfectly suited for both working and recreational environments.

Some of the great things about a utility vehicle are;

1. More seating - The ability to carry passengers, allowing you transport people, or items is valuable given that this facility isn't available on a quad bike unless it has been designed specifically for it (Two-seat quads, for example)

2. 3 point seatbelts - While many off-road vehicles only feature a lap strap, just like your car or van, Can-Am utility vehicles feature 3 point seatbelts for maximum safety and protection.

3. Rear loads tray - You no longer worry have to worry about taking a trailer with you everywhere you go with your quad bike, instead now your tools, wood or dogs can be loaded into the bed of the utility vehicle, making things much more convenient.

4. UTVs (and ATVs) are homologated, meaning they are suitable for road use as long as they are registered. UTVs can be registered as Agricultural if doing short distances from field to field, or Private Light Goods meaning they can be used for extended journeys where they are permitted. You can use your full car license to utilise this. Often, customers will register as PLG (Private light goods) so they can use their machine on the farm and take it to do their shopping.

5. Keeps you dry - It may sound simple enough, but the elements can be a rough ride (pun intended!). When there is rain and wind hitting you in the face in the depths of winter, things aren't quite as fun. See below for some of the accessory options available to you when purchasing a Can-Am.

Do utility vehicles need to be registered?

Dependent on the usage on the vehicle will depend on whether or not your utility vehicle needs to be registered with DVLA, and be made ‘Road Legal’. Can-Am does manufacture homologated machines, meaning they can be used for this exact purpose.

For example, if you are a farmer driving the vehicle strictly on your own land with no road usage at all, then the vehicle won’t need to be registered. If you are a farmer who is going between fields using small amounts of road, and not travelling far from your property, then an agricultural registration will suffice. If you’re a farmer who wants to use your vehicle on your land but also to go down to the local shop for a sandwich, then you’ll need to register it as a ‘Private Light Goods’ vehicle, or ‘PLG’, as it’s more commonly known.

If you aren’t sure of what registration you are going to require, you can have a chat with one of our experts (By calling 01608 652653) who will happily assist you.

Can I buy Can-Am accessories for my UTV?

A utility vehicle is a vehicle that is designed for an application and to carry out a job that would otherwise be a challenge in a traditional passenger vehicle. Often, UTVs are used as a maintenance vehicle, thanks to the highly efficient flatbed that is at the back of the machine, making them perfectly suited for both working and recreational environments.

With a utility vehicle, you can customise items to your heart's content. Perhaps a half door, canvas doors, or doors with electric windows take your fancy? You can add a heater, a radio or even some obnoxiously bright LED bars, whatever it is you want, we can probably fit it for you!
